Mediterranean Diet Recipes

Eat healthy and be active is the universally acknowledged theory to staying fit. Food has to be appealing to the eyes and kindle the taste buds too. The Mediterranean diet is a healthy balanced diet of plant food cooked in good fat. That does not mean there is a total cut on animal products. The Mediterranean diet pyramid recommends animal fat and products to be taken in small quantities occasionally. In a Mediterranean diet a major portion includes vegetables, cherries, spinach, beans, mushrooms, tomatoes, watermelon, eggplant and potatoes. Whole grain bread, pastas and cereals are the main course in the diet. Fruit is the most preferred dessert. The food is followed by wine that is consumed in small or moderate amount. Wines are prepared from grapes, pomegranates and persimmons. The diet is also inclusive of dairy products especially cheese that is to be taken in a small quantity.

Mediterranean cuisines are known for their wonderful taste and time saving cooking practices. The recipes widely make use of olive oil in cooking, garnishing and salad dressing. It is a low saturated fat that acts as an antioxidant too. Dairy products like milk, yogurt and cheese are added flavors used in a very low amount. For instance, cheese is used only for flavor and not excessively as a cooking base. Butter and margarine are almost absent in the diet. Similarly, fish, poultry and meat are often grilled or roasted and never fried.

The recipes do not make use of any processed food. For instance they would prefer fresh spinach to processed and salted canned food. Mediterranean diet recipes are unique for their flavor and taste. Most of the flavors in various food preparations come with the use of onion, garlic, spices such as cinnamon, clove, pepper, oregano, Italian parsley and certain natural herbs like basils -- all cooked in olive oil. There is also wide use of citrus juices such as lemon and orange used in cooking. In fact, wine is used in recipes whether it be a main dish, salad or dessert. The recipes vary from state to state, and are fresh vegetables and other plant food produced locally. However, most of the flavor favors remain the same like the olive oil.

10 Home Remedies for Acne

Acne - a skin condition nobody really wants but almost everyone gets at one point in their lives. How to say sayonara forever? Unfortunately, this is the challenge.

At present, there remains no surefire way to get rid of acne. While there are many remedies in the market that claim to zap your zit problems away in a heartbeat, their effects differ from person to person. If you have mild acne, over the counter remedies could work well with you. But if you have a severe face issue, you might want to consult a dermatologist directly. Either way, you will have to spend on medication.

If your acne is not as bad and you feel that you can muster home remedy trial and error, here are some of the acne remedies most people swear by: (But, hey, always keep in mind that different strokes respond to different folks, so these are definitely NOT carved in stone.)

1) Squeeze the juice out of a lemon and mix it with the same amount of rose water. Dab the mixture onto your face and let it sit there for at least 30 minutes, after which you'll need to wash your face with fresh water. Do this for 15 consecutive days and you'll see that your pimples and acne have noticeably reduced and the scars have started to fade.

2) Use Nettle Tea. Nettle tea contains some curing element that works its magic on basic skin problems. Four cups a day should do the trick.

3) For those annoying acne lesions, try applying aloe vera extract to you face twice a day.

4) Toothpaste can also be a great instant acne remedy. Dab a little on your zit before going to bed and your pimple should be noticeably smaller when you wake up. Just make sure you use the paste, and not the gel, formula.

5) One of the more popular acne home remedies is fresh mint juice. Apply it all over your face and let it stay there overnight.

6) Here's a smelly acne home remedy: crushed garlic cloves. Dab them on your face once or twice a day.

7) Honey with cinnamon power. Mix up a paste using one teaspon of cinnamon power and 3 tablespoons of honey. Put it on your face before you go to bed and rinse it off as soon as you wake up using warm water. Two weeks of doing this will help make your pimples go away for a considerable period (or, if you're lucky, forever!).

8) Wash your face clean with water and then dab your pimples with cotton balls that have been previously soaked in vinegar.

9) To thoroughly cleanse your face and pores, use either an almond or oatmeal mask. Mis either with rose water, enough to turn it into a paste and spread on your skin, paying special attention to your problem areas. Let them stay and dry for around 15 minutes and then rinse them off with cold water. This will help you get rid of those annoying blackheads and whiteheads.

10) Mash tomatoes to a pulp and apply them on your pimples and acne. Leave them on for about one hour and then wash them off.

There are many more acne home remedies around, and if you're creative and resourceful, you might even be able to conjure one up yourself. When working with home acne remedies, though, always keep in mind that it's still always best to consult a professional about your skin problems. Because when all else fails, you'll definitely be forced to see a dermatologist (and you might end up paying more).

But, hey, if it works for you, then, by all means, keep doing it.

High Blood Pressure ? A Dangerous Problem With An Often Simple Solution

In recent years changes in diet and lifestyle in many western societies have led to an increase in the number of people suffering from high blood pressure.

High blood pressure (otherwise known as hypertension, or more correctly arterial hypertension) is a serious condition which rarely carries any symptoms and which, if not detected and treated, can lead to stroke, heart attack, heart failure, arterial aneurysm or renal failure ? all of which are series life-threatening conditions.

So just what is high blood pressure and what causes it?

The arteries of your body and constantly filled with blood which exerts a normal background pressure on the walls of the arteries. As the heart pumps freshly oxygenated blood around the body it forces this blood into the arteries momentarily raising the pressure exerted on the walls of the arteries during each beat of the heart. These two pressures are known as the systolic pressure (the higher pumping pressure of the heart) and the diastolic pressure (the lower background pressure).

Normal levels of blood pressure vary from individual to individual but, on average, systolic pressure should be around 120 mm Hg (millimeters of mercury measured on a manometer) and diastolic pressure should be about 80 mm Hg. This is ordinarily expressed as a blood pressure of 120/80.

If your blood pressure starts to rise and remains at a level above 120/80 then you are described as being prehypertensive and, while this is not serious in itself, it is an indication that you may be at risk of developing hypertension and the problems associated with it. Once your blood pressure reaches, and maintains, a level of 140/90 or above you are said to be suffering from hypertension and action needs to be taken to reduce your blood pressure.

But what causes your blood pressure to rise and remain elevated?

Well, there are several factors at play here and the first is a group over which you have little, if any, control. This group includes a low birth weight, a variety of genetic factors, certain forms of diabetes (in particular type 2 diabetes) and your age (as we grow older our arteries tend to become fibrous and lose their elasticity, resulting in a smaller cross-sectional area through which the blood can flow).

The second group of factors is much more within your control and includes leading a sedentary lifestyle, high levels of salt and/or saturated fats in the diet, being overweight, smoking, alcohol abuse, stress and working in certain occupations such as flying or motorway maintenance, which involves exposure to long periods of high level roadway noise.

The vast majority of these factors are of course treatable and, in many cases, a simple adjustment to your diet and the addition of some form of exercise into your daily routine is all that is needed to solve the problem. The difficulty however is that, without any real symptoms, most people simply don't know that they are suffering from high blood pressure in the first place.

So how do you solve the problem?

Fortunately the answer to this question is very simple. All you need to do is to pop into your doctor's office on a regular basis (for most of us a couple of times a year will do the trick) and ask the doctor, or practice nurse, to check your blood pressure. The whole process is painless, simple and fast and will give you peace of mind and possibly save your doctor a lot of time, work and expense later on when you are forced to present yourself at his office once hypertension has set in.

If, like most people, you are not so keen on visiting your doctor then an excellent alternative today is to simply monitor your own blood pressure at home. A wide range of easy to operate and relatively inexpensive monitors are available today, allowing you to keep an eye on your own health, and that of your family, in the comfort and privacy of your own home.

Ever Hear of This Fruit?

I want to tell you about the most healthful and most delicious tropical fruit that you?d ever want to taste. It?s called the mangosteen, and the reason you?ve probably never heard of it is because you can?t buy it in the United States. However, you can buy the juice of the fruit and I?ll tell you how you can do that at the end of this article.

The Mystique
The mangosteen is a lovely tropical fruit that grows well in SE Asia. It cannot be imported into the U.S. because of laws that prohibit the importation of untreated plants that might harbor agricultural pests. The good news is that Hawaii is starting to grow and harvest the mangosteen, so there is hope that one day we will be able to buy the fruit at local markets.

The mangosteen has been nicknamed the ?Queen of Fruits.? It received its nickname because Queen Victoria of England loved the fruit and declared it to be her favorite fruit. As the story goes she offered a knighthood to anyone who could bring her some.

The taste of the mangosteen has been described in glowing terms. The July, 2003, issue of Gourmet magazine featured an article about the fruit. The author, David Karp, declared ?the flavor was almost unbearably exquisite.? Further, he states that ?many people consider mangosteen the finest fruit in the world.? Needless to say, the fruit is sweet and delicious. I?ll tell you further on how you can taste the juice, which is legally available.

The Facts
Mantosteen fruit grows on an evergreen broad leafed tree that grows well in SE Asia. The fruit is a red-purple orb about the size of a large plum or small orange. The rind is thick and contains some remarkable healthful phytonutrients that have been used successfully for many generations in SE Asia. The 5 to 7 lobed fruit inside has a wonderful taste, as described earlier, and yields an excellent juice.

The tree grows patiently and will not yield fruit until it is 7 to 12 years old. At that age the tree may produce 60 fruits. The tree will mature after about 22 years and at that time may yield 1600 fruits and may be harvested twice a year. Such a tree is a living gold mine.

The Science
The benefits of vitamins B, C, E and certain minerals as antioxidants are well studied and widely known. However, not so widely known, according to Fred Templeman, M.D., is that ?there exist other antioxidants even more potent than vitamins.? One of these substances, called xanthones, provides important nutrition and is a substance used by every system in the body.

The importance of the mangosteen is that of all the known fruits, tropical or otherwise, it contains the single greatest known supply of xanthones, about 20 different ones in all. These phytonutrients are found in the rind of the fruit. In order to receive the healthful benefits of xanthones, one must utilize the whole fruit, a practice that has been ongoing in SE Asia for many generations. A whole food puree is now available in the United States that combines the amazing phytonutrients of the rind with the rich, delicious juice of the inner pulp.

In case you are curious, as I was, about the scientific evidence found in the professional life science publications, go to the internet location www.pubmed.com. That website is a service of the National Library of Medicine and provides access to over 12 million professional articles dating back to the mid-1960?s. A search in their library recently yielded 234 articles regarding the keyword, ?xanthone,? and 11 articles regarding the keyword ?mangosteen.?

The Juice
Unfortunately the mangosteen fruit itself cannot currently be imported into the U.S., but fortunately a puree of the whole fruit and the juice can be made in the U.S. and is available under the brand name Xango. The name itself combines the nutritional substance, xanthone, with the fruit, mangosteen. It is readily available by phone order or from local direct marketers.

Lifting Weights Won't Make You Musclebound

In 1937, Dr. Peter Karpovich of Springfield College in Massachusetts published a ground breaking paper showing that lifting weights helped men improve their coordination. At the time, his paper was ridiculed by most athletes in professional sports. Many of the most famous baseball players before World War II laughed at him because they were rich, famous and the best and most adored athletes in the world, and they didn't lift weights. They were afraid that lifting weights would cause them to develop such large muscles that they wouldn't be able to control them and they would lose the fine coordination necessary to hit and throw a baseball. They announced that lifting weights would make a ball player musclebound.

Today violin players and watchmakers, who require extraordinary coordination and dexterity, well beyond that needed to hit a baseball, lift weights because they know that there is no such condition as musclebound. Today's baseball players all lift weights and they are so much stronger and better athletes, that the best baseball players in the world before 1940 couldn't possibly even make today's baseball teams because they weren't strong enough.

Training for strength improves coordination. Your brain is a master switchboard that coordinates your muscles. Lifting weights does not interfere with brain function; it improves coordination in events that require strength, such as playing sports, working as a carpenter, opening a stuck door or beating a drum. Strength training makes you faster. Muscles are made up of slow and fast twitch fibers. The slow-twitch, red fibers are used primarily for endurance, for running long distances or performing continuous work. The fast twitch, white fibers are used primarily for strength and speed. The same fast-twitch fibers that are strengthened by weight-lifting are used for speed, so the stronger your muscle is, the faster you can move it.

Lifting weights will improve your performance in every sport that requires power. It can help you to run faster, jump higher, throw further and lift heavier. High jumpers do squats with heavy weights on their shoulders. Javelin throwers must strengthen their arms and legs, and sprinters work to strengthen their legs.

What Can Muscle Milk Do For Me?

As the name suggests, muscle milk is a supplement that is rich in the proteins necessary for ultimate muscle growth and fitness. Essentially having its beginnings in the composition of human mother?s milk after much research muscle milk emerges as a much-improved version.

There are many protein sources available besides muscle milk. Extensive research concerning muscle milk protein, however, indicates that the ingredients in muscle milk have vastly superior advantages for athletes. Muscle milk is capable of increasing muscle growth faster due to increased muscle synthesis.

Because of this muscle milk gained importance among the body building fraternity as muscle milk protein aids with tissue growth and repair. An intake of muscle milk protein ensures that the body receives the building blocks it requires for producing amino acids. These acids from muscle milk are necessary for strong muscle tissue and enhanced natural body healing.

This valuable effect of muscle milk protein means a decrease in the time spent recovering from muscle injuries and strains. The anti-inflammatory effects of muscle milk allows for longer training periods with shorter recovery time, while taking muscle milk.

The precursory effects achieved through muscle milk intake replenish protein levels, which are quickly lost during a workout. Muscle milk protein balances blood sugar levels thus minimising the urge to overeat. Energy obtained through food intake is properly utilized by muscle milk and blood sugar fluctuations are minimised by muscle milk protein.

While muscle milk is relatively low in lactose and fats, muscle milk contains calories with engineered lipids, which promote leanness while quickly building and strengthening muscle. These calories in muscle milk provide athletes with the increased energy necessary for a workout. Importantly, muscle milk achieves this while leaving the minimum of fatty deposits within the body. The muscle milk formula can boost the immune system because muscle milk protein contains ingredients in all the correct quantities for optimal system performance.

The muscle milk protein in muscle milk plays an antioxidant role while enhancing hormonal and cellular responses. The side effects of muscle milk are minimal as long as the proper dosage instructions of muscle milk protein intake are followed. Muscle milk allows for more energy to be retained in the body, freeing up the protein and amino acids for utilization at higher levels of muscle growth and function. The mineral retention necessary for muscular contraction is further enhanced by muscle milk protein, increasing flexibility of motion.

Muscle milk contains a complex combination of proteins, peptides and certain amino acids. When muscle milk is taken at least 30 minutes before a strenuous workout muscle milk floods the system with muscle milk protein, growth nutrients and acid buffering agents. The natural production of creatine is enhanced by muscle milk, resulting in efficient energy production and strength when taking muscle milk.

Muscle growth is increased dramatically by muscle milk, as is fat metabolism and muscle synthesis. A supplement of muscle milk protein has distinct advantages for athletes wanting to build muscle quickly while increasing fitness levels. Muscle milk's complete health enhancing abilities makes muscle milk protein an excellent choice for anyone.

After Effects Of Waxing Are There Any?

If you have been remotely considering the variety of different hair removal options out there, you are likely to have heard about waxing. This procedure ? waxing - is quite simple, but painful. For many, it will be something that they will subject themselves to every couple of weeks to maintain their appearance. But, what are the side effects or after effects, if any, of waxing?

What?s Going To Happen?

While, this can be done at home, a trip to the waxing salon is the preferred method. This is primarily because it allows for individuals to have the procedure done professionally which translates to faster, less painful and a more thorough application.

Firstly, it is important to realize what happens during this procedure. This begins with a coat of warm wax applied to the skin to be treated and then a paper is applied to it. When the wax cools and hardens slightly, it bonds to the hair and to the paper. The paper is pulled quickly from the skin, removing the hair from the follicle. This procedure is beneficial because it reaches deep into the follicle to remove the hair. The hair will not regrow for up to a few weeks at a time.

Now Give Me The Bad News

Have you ever wondered if something could go wrong at your next waxing appointment? There are several things that can happen to you during and after waxing that you should be well aware of before you get it done:

?Why is my skin turning red?? - One of the most common reactions to the waxing procedure is hyper pigmentation or redness of the skin that was treated. This reaction happens to most individuals and is just the reaction that your skin has to being stressed. In most cases, it will be gone within a few minutes.

?Is it supposed to hurt this much?? - Most people do find waxing to be somewhat painful but not unbearable. The pain occurs only when the hair is removed and normally stops within a few seconds. Again, using the bandage analogy, it is similar to the pain of a bandage being removed quickly from the skin.

?I?m scarred? - In some cases, there is minimal scarring that occurs. This is rare but it does happen.

?Ingrown hairs?? - Ingrown hair can also happen. In most cases, this occurs because the hair does not go back correctly once it has been removed. Removal often repairs the problem.

?Heard of Folliculitis?? - In some rare cases, folliculitis can also occur. This is the inflammation of the follicle itself. It can be treated with medication if necessary, but often is not.

In order to insure that your waxing procedure goes as well as possible, the best course of action is to insure that a professional with experience does it for you.
