An Effective Exercise Routine for Beginners

Let's start with this very important rule: NEVER OVERDO THE FIRST FEW SESSIONS. Many beginners to exercising fall for this trap, especially when they do not have qualified trainers with them. They get overly excited and lose patience. They try to produce in two weeks what often takes years to accomplish.

They begin by going all out right from the start doing as much as they can. The next day, their joints and muscles lock up in pain. Then, they get discouraged, stop exercising for a while and give it up altogether. Workouts should start out smooth and easy.

Here is a warm-up routine to do 1 set of before every workout, but doing 3 sets of these alone can be a pretty good workout; particularly if you are a beginner.

LEG STRETCH

Lean over deeply on your left foot while your right leg is stretched out to your right side. Maintain balance. Slowly, raise yourself with your left leg to a standing position. As you stand, spread your feet wide apart. Repeat this for ten counts. Do steps 1 to 4 again; this time, alternate the legs' position (left becomes right, and vice-versa). This exercise warms up your legs, calves, and abdomen.

LEG SQUAT

Stand erect, chest out, with your buttocks protruding and your stomach in. Put your hands straight out in front of you. Relax. Do squats by bending your legs to lower your body. Bend your legs until your upper legs (thighs) are parallel to the ground and you are in a squatting position. Keep your body erect as you squat. Then raise yourself as you straighten your legs back to a standing position. Do around 5 to 10 squats. Inhale deeply as you go down. Exhale as you stand up. This exercise warms up your leg muscles, calves, and the muscles in your abdomen.

TRUNK TWIST

Stand with your feet about 3 feet apart. Relax. Place your hands behind your head with your elbows out to the sides. Very slowly, twist your body to your right without moving your legs or feet. Try to twist to your right as far as possible. Your face and body should be facing your right side while your legs remain steady. Then hold on to this position for 10 seconds. Do the same to your left side. This exercise warms up your legs, back muscles, and abdomen.

ARM ROTATION

Stretch out your arms to your sides. Keep them level with your shoulders. Simultaneously rotate both arms to the front. Do this 20 times each rotation. This exercises your shoulders, arms, and back muscles.

ARMS PRESS

Bring your right and left palms together. Have all fingers and palms pressing each other in front of you while pointing the fingers upwards. Simultaneously push one palm against the other as hard as you can. Keep pushing for 5 seconds. Relax. Then push again for 5 seconds. Do this ten times. Exhale as you push, and inhale as you relax. Then press both palms in front of you while having their fingers pointing in different directions one set of fingers pointing to your left, the other set to your right. If your left fingers point to the right, your left hand should be under your right hand. Push both palms against each other, the left palm pushing upwards, the right palm pushing downwards. Exhale as you push, and inhale as you relax. Do this ten times. Then change the positions of your palms (left over right) and do the same procedures. This exercises your forearms, arms, shoulders, and latissimus muscles (the muscles at the sides that give your body a V shape).

NECK PUSH

Gently move your head to your right side while your right hand gently pushes back against it. Do this once. Gently move your head to your left side as your left hand gently pushes back against it. Do this once. Gently move your head backwards as your left or right hand gently pushes back against it. Do this once. Gently bow your head to the front as your right or left hand gently pushes against your forehead. Do this once. This exercise strengthens your neck muscles. Never do neck rotations.

PUSH-UP

Do slow push-ups from 10 to 15 counts. This exercises your arms, chest, shoulders, part of your abdomen, and part of your back muscles.

JOGGING

Jog in place for 3 minutes. Then jog in place a lot faster for 2 minutes. Then jog in place with a normal pace for another 3 minutes. This exercise gives you a good leg and calf warm-up. This also serves as aerobics for your lungs and heart.

There! That ought to do it. After doing the above warm up exercises for some time, you should be ready start doing regular weight training and cardio workouts. Then just do 1 set of these exercises to properly warm up before you start each workout.

Benefits From Using An Independent Review Organization (IRO) For Hospital Peer Review Services

Hospitals that have come to us for the first time for medical peer review services often have cases that have been either in litigation or subject to potential litigation for months if not years. We have been able to quickly help litigation teams and hospital quality managers gain clarity about these situations so they can more easily decide what their next course of action should be. In cases of litigation, if a hospital knows that their physician provider was at fault in a particular situation that leads to a bad outcome or a sentinel event, it makes more sense to settle those cases quickly, rather than incur more legal expenses by continuing to defend themselves.

When hospitals first experience successful case resolution through an outsourced peer review, they begin to believe that outsourcing to an independent review organization can have lasting benefits and should be done on a more systematic basis. Applying ?best practices? and ?quality management? to the process means that an organization is trying to reduce negative patient outcomes and sentinel events and, as a result, it will send a certain percentage its peer review committee cases out to an independent review organization to be looked at. Oftentimes, our clients send us cases in groups where we?re asked not to look just at ?bad outcomes?.

The ?bad outcome? cases might be interspersed in a larger sampling of cases where nothing went wrong at all, assuring that our peer specialists are getting a representative sampling of cases allowing for a high degree of objectivity in the review. So many hospitals have gone from an initial experience outsourcing a sensitive case to an IRO to using an IRO as a part of an ongoing quality management process. A systematic, proactive approach to sending out sensitive cases has been done for oncology groups, radiology groups and other specialty groups inside hospitals. We also review samplings for other specialty areas including general surgery, orthopedics and neurosurgery-- all with great results. Today outsourced peer review for hospitals and medical groups is rapidly being adopted as a ?best practice.?

A Different Weight Loss Tip

This is no diet but a weight loss tip that is a little different than most of the weight loss tips around. It is targeted to people suffering from food addiction, especially overweight people that love to eat unhealthy, fat food in huge portions. It is a psychological weight loss approach for changing food or eating habits by erasing the mind pattern that holds the old food habits and replacing them with a new and healthy pattern. Your job is to repeatedly perform an exercise where you associate strong positive feelings to losing weight and negative feelings to eat your favourite food. Here is what you do:

I

Imagine yourself overweight and heavy, eating your favourite food; hamburger, french fries, potato chips, bacon or whatever. Think of this food as garbage that you have picked out of a trash can, that someone else has not been able to finish and has discarded. With cats and dogs eating side by side with you, hoping to get what you don?t finish. Imagine that the hamburger meat is not cooked to your satisfaction, possibly under-cooked and cold besides, with a smell less than inviting coming from all the added condiments which are running from the sides of the partly cooked, partly eaten burger which may have your stomach turning upside down. Think of all the nasty, unhealthy things that may have happened to your ?less than good for you? food before you got to it. Perhaps horse meat or even dog mean was mixed together with toxic fillers and flavouring added just to mislead you into believing you?re eating fresh and tasteful food?. Your heavy stomach is growing bigger and bigger, it?s about to blow up, your heart rate is accelerating, you having problems breathing, your stomach starts to hurt tremendously? you feel pressure from in your stomach like the rotten food wants to come up? Are you still hungry? Are you nauseated? Do you want to vomit? Go and vomit! Keep on elaborating on this image until you can?t stand it anymore ? only your fantasy sets the limits.

II

Now, make a list of all kinds of fresh, healthy foods like fruits, vegetables, various sorts of grain, nuts and seeds. Imagine these foods arranged attractively on your plate. Imagine yourself eating this food as a healthy, sound, slim and strong person radiating your soundness, joy and great self image. You feel better than ever before. You are a successful person that succeeds in everything you do. You are eating living, fresh food from Mother nature, no flavours added, no chemicals only the fresh, healthy food that God has provided for you. You look at yourself walking or jogging along the beach, people smiling at you and you smiling back as you experience a feeling of energy and the joy of being alive. You see yourself having conversations with people you meet in a nice and trustful atmosphere. You know you have an excellent looking, healthy and strong body and that you only eat food that make you strong and healthy; tasteful and fresh food directly from nature. You?re feeling great, you?re feeling secure with yourself and you?re loving life. Keep on elaborating on this image as well.

Continue to eat as you did before but practice these exercises every day; when you find yourself about to eat what you know is not beneficial to attain and sustain a healthy body, imagine the first practice mentioned above before you eat and after that takes effect, take your imagination to the second practice. Once you start with a routine of eating better, eating healthier, soon the second practice will not be in your imagination but become a reality. It is vital that you repeat this exercise as often as needed. If done consistently and focused, you will surely change your food habits for the better. While the first imaginary practice may have been a bit gross, it is up to you and your imagination to create what will to the trick for you.

Wheatgrass Juicers Improve Your Health With Wheatgrass

There are several reasons to juice wheatgrass, the chief of which is that wheatgrass is a wonderful source of living chlorophyll. Chlorophyll is a pigment in plants that contains magnesium. The juice that is the product of wheatgrass being juiced is extremely full of vitamins and nutrients and while the juice is fresh it is rated as one of the best juices to consume for anyone and everyone.

This grass is wheat in its early stages and once the grass reaches about seven or eight days it is at its optimal stage to be picked and juiced. The juice must be drunk as soon after juicing as possible to ensure that you receive the most nutritional rewards from your hard work. Chlorophyll contains high levels of oxygen and is responsible for keeping plants oxygenated.

For many people wheatgrass juice is viewed as having powers of rejuvenation, it has been called the plasma of youth as well as the life blood of plants and thereby being extremely beneficial to humans. If you look at all the elements that are absent in your body's cells, there will be the realization that all of these, especially hormones, enzymes, nucleic acids and vitamins can all be regained by drinking the juice of this green health injection on a regular basis.

Over the years wheatgrass juice has displayed a very beneficial effect on many people who consume it on a regular basis. These beneficial effects have been shown to be both many and varied. Wheatgrass has been shown to cleanse the lymph system leaving the body in a far cleaner state than prior to the intake of wheatgrass juice. This juice has also demonstrated that it has the power to help build levels of oxygen and nutrients in the blood. Juicing wheatgrass also gives you access to a liquid that will help to restore balance to your body by removing the toxic metals that reside in your cells and your liver and kidneys will feel the wheatgrass' nourishing and vitality restorative properties.

There are many juicers out there that will provide you with the means to juice your wheatgrass adequately and you will receive benefits from your juice, but in order to ensure that you receive the maximum beneficial effects from your wheatgrass juice, you need to use a juicer specifically engineered for juicing wheatgrass.

Since wheatgrass is very leafy it requires a different type of juicer to most fruit and vegetables. The best juicer to use is a masticating juicer that is built to handle wheatgrass because wheatgrass needs to be crushed to get the most nutrients out of your produce. I addition to juicing with the appropriate machine it is recommended that you grow your own wheatgrass so that you can be sure that you are drinking juice that has been made from wheatgrass that has been picked at the optimal time and juiced within a reasonable to ensure that you get a super drink from all the produce you juice.

Wrinkle Treatment ? Smoothen Out Those Lines

The Webster?s Dictionary defines a wrinkle as ?a small ridge or furrow in a normally smooth surface?. But you should see how the whole world is up in arms against this small furrow. This is evident by the millions of dollars spent on wrinkle treatment. And, everywhere you will find animated discussions over wrinkles and wrinkle treatment.

Wrinkles are the result of depletion of collagen and elastin. This can be due to ageing or prolonged exposure to the sun. Wrinkles are common in dry skin or particular skin types like fair skin with blue eyes. Smoking and genes also play a hand in wrinkles. Wrinkle treatment aims at restoring the skin elasticity.

Wrinkles can be either fine lines or deep creases. Fine lines respond readily to treatment while the remedy for the latter type is along harsher lines like plastic surgery. Wrinkle treatment spans the entire gamut from cosmetic cures to medical treatment, and surgical procedures.

A superficial wrinkle treatment involves minor lifestyle changes like cutting down on nicotine, junk and fatty foods and having more water to keep dehydration at bay. You should also guard your sensitive skin from the sun?s harmful rays with sun blocks and covered garments.

Medical wrinkle remedy is a milder form of treatment. In this range you have antioxidants like formulas containing Vitamins A, C and E, beta-carotene, fruits like blue and black berries, fish, red wine, moisturizers and cosmetics that include AHA (alpha-hydroxy acid) or fruit acids.

However, one of the best treatments against wrinkles in the medical arena is Vitamin A acid. Vitamin A treatment is also effective against other skin problems like dryness and pigmentation.

Amongst the plethora of cosmetic procedures, the skin peel reigns supreme as an effective anti-wrinkle remedy. Glycolic acid peels work only on the surface of the skin and as such are not much effective against wrinkles. It takes penetrative peels like salicylic and trichloroacetic acids (TCA) to produce visible results. In fact, TCA peels are the best wrinkle remedy that is presently around.

Dermabrasion and laser resurfacing are other peel types used as wrinkle remedy. Both involve a scraping of the skin surface. However, laser resurfacing is more penetrative and like the copper-peptide cream boosts the body?s collagen production to pump out the drooping muscles and the wrinkles. It also entails a longer recuperation time.

Nevertheless, laser resurfacing peel-type wrinkle remedy involves side effects like scarring and pigmentation. They should be undergone only under mild sedation or general anesthesia, as prescribed.

Recent years have seen much fanfare around the Botox injection. This treatment involves paralyzing the muscles with botulinum toxin shots to smooth out the wrinkles, laugh and frown lines. The effects last for several months.

For those willing to submit themselves under the surgeon?s scalpel, plastic surgery is an option for wrinkle remedy. A facelift or a brow lift can also act as an effective wrinkle reducer.

Now, you can keep away skin resembling an old parchment. With the proper wrinkle treatment, look 25 at 45.

Cutting the Root of Suffering and Obstacles

This is my 18th year of teaching trainings ? four per year! One of the best things about teaching this course is that I always present something I never have presented before. It may be a new idea altogether, or a core concept that I have presented many times, but that I suddenly find I am presenting in a completely new way.

I found myself explaining to this class that all problems arise from the ego -- the sense of limited fearful separation. Problems, defined as unnecessary emotional suffering, are optional! We?re not required to have them, and in fact, we never have a justifiable reason to suffer fearful emotional distress! Of course we will experience sadness and grief at the loss of a loved one, but without a sense of ego, of limited self, we do not suffer distress -- in the sense of being diminished or weakened or deprived by the experience. Without the ego, we don?t create a mournful story which we constantly replay to depress ourselves.

As I presented this in class, I was astonished -- even though these ideas are by no means new to me. Presenting to the class in this way made them new to me once again. So I started contemplating daily on my morning walks ? remembering that the only problems or suffering I have are due to ego attachment. Otherwise I could be experiencing the Higher Self List 24 hours a day ? Joy, Freedom, Exuberance, etc., (see my other ezine articles on choosing the Higher Self and releasing anger).

On these walks I realized that just because a particular outcome I was looking forward to has not yet appeared, nor the funds to realize it, does not require me to shrink in any fearful way. I saw how grasping and desiring this outcome was creating a temptation to feel fearful and small. So I released this attachment repeatedly and enjoyed the sense of lightness and openness in my chest, and the clarity in my mind, that resulted.

Then I went further, examining the desire to grasp ?Jack,? to ?be Jack,? to identify as this body/mind. I repeatedly practiced releasing my hold on being Jack, on wanting to survive as this body. Releasing at the root of ego in this way made it very clear that stress, and having problems are entirely optional.

Does it seem outrageous to think in this way ? to question the idea that you are your body/mind/personality? Since we all will have to release it at the moment of death, why wait until we are forced to let go? It may seem very scary if we wait. Don?t you think it would be better to practice now, so that letting go of the body at the moment of death could actually be fun? Having released attachment to the body so thoroughly in advance ? at the moment of death it would already be a done deal! Not only that, we would have lived a life free of suffering and full of Joy!

This is one way to define an enlightened being: someone who is completely free from body/mind/personality identification. By the way, body/mind/personality functions just fine, and even much better, once the grasping identification is released.

You might try repeatedly asking yourself, ?Can I let go of being (your name), can I let go of thinking I am this body?? It doesn?t matter whether the answer is ?yes? or ?no? ? either one is OK. Just notice your inner feeling each time you ask.

Good luck!

What Actually Is Health?

Nature works mostly on the principle of thing and no thing. Light is the thing and darkness is the absence of light. Sound is the thing and silence is the absence of sound. Health is the thing, and symptoms and disease are the absence of health. But some time back they got mixed up. Somehow symptoms and disease became the thing, and once you treated away the symptoms and disease, you would be left with health. And yet most people know that health is more than the absence of symptoms and disease. So what does this mean? It means you have to do something other than treat symptoms and disease to be healthy. Let me show you why. If there are shadows or darkness in a room, the only way to get light in the room is by turning on the light. No matter how many ways you can measure and quantify shadows, you cannot sweep them under a rug, cut them out of the room, or invent some chemical to get rid of the shadow. The only thing you can do is turn on the light.

Health is the thing. And no matter how many ways you can measure and quantify symptoms and disease, the only way to be healthy is to add to your health. You can treat your symptoms and disease all you want and you will never be left with health. You can treat symptoms and disease with medicine, herbs, supplements, chiropractic, surgery or anything and until you add to your health, you will not be healthier. Treating symptoms and disease naturally is better than with medicine and surgery because there are less side effects, but you are still not adding to your health.

Treating Symptoms and Disease often helps make you more comfortable, but never healthier. The only way to be healthy is adding to your health.

Isn't It Interesting That You Are Never Bored When Your Head Is In The Refrigerator?

At the age of 70 I retired. Happy days were ahead. I could do what I want, when I want and if I want to do nothing that?s okay too. I watched daytime TV, did the crossword puzzles, read the newspapers, and kept in touch with friends and family through email. I played some games on the computer and checked out the internet. Of course, I ate a lot because the food was there. When I did wander out, it was the mall or the supermarket where I could buy lots of goodies to keep me happy. When you?re retired, wandering aimlessly through the stores, spending money foolishly is not what you want to do. So what do you do? I didn?t want to be one of those old people sitting around waiting to die. I could see myself falling into a depression. Would you say I needed a new challenge in life!

The day of awakening came with a phone call from a friend. ?The Parks Department has a Community Center nearby; they have all kinds of classes; let?s go check it out.? Now, I thought, what could I possibly do there? What I did find there was a low impact aerobics class that would help me take off the weight I had managed to put on. I joined the class, had a good time and met some really nice people. They were all discussing the line dance class they had joined and what fun it was. When I was about 10 years old, my brother who was five years older than I, used to practice his jitterbug on me and I grew up dancing during the wonderful era of the big bands. I didn?t get to dance much later in life and forgot how much I enjoyed it,

With a bit of trepidation I joined the line dance class. It wasn?t just country music anymore. They taught Mambo, Cha-Cha, Waltz, and I was in heaven. The only problem, since I was sure I knew how to dance, was thinking this was going to be soooooo easy! It turned out that I was the only newbie in the class and I also realized there?s no partner to lead me around the floor. At first I thought I must have turned stupid in my old age, but then realized that line dancing is mostly memory and my memory was not too sharp anymore. I was going to stick with it! The dances are a number of sets that are repeated during the dance and you have to be aware of the sequence, what steps come next. Fortunately, I did not take myself too seriously. Someone once said ?dance as if no one is looking? so that?s exactly what I did. I laughed a lot, persevered and promised myself I would not give up. I finally did it! It all fell into place.

The moral of the story?.. dance class is much less expensive than doctors and psychiatrists; it gives you a natural high! I lost weight; I lost inches; I started to eat healthier when I saw the weight loss and my memory has improved tremendously. I?m exercising my brain by learning something new with each dance. I learned so well, that at the age of 75, the Parks & Recreation Department offered me a job teaching line dancing. My students always compliment me on my youthful looks and demeanor; something I don?t mind hearing.

I just read that Socrates learned to dance when he was seventy because he felt that an essential part of himself had been neglected. Isn?t it funny that with all the aches and pains that come with age, I don?t feel a bit of pain when I dance? It must be that ?natural high?.

The Many Benefits of Microdermabrasion

There are numerous microdermabrasion benefits. One of the most noteworthy advantages is that there is no downtime after treatment. Microdermabrasion evolved from a technique called dermabrasion. Dermabrasion has been around for decades and was used to treat severe scarring by polishing the uppermost surface of the skin with an abrasive, metallic attachment. This highly effective technique requires recovery time, not to mention anesthesia. Microdermabrasion is gifted with a gentler, less invasive skin-resurfacing technology.

Microdermabrasion employs specially formulated creams that are packed with the power of micro-crystals. These ultra-exfoliating creams are designed to take skin care to a new level, especially when combined with a re-surfacing wand. The re-surfacing wand gently buffs or massages your tissues and drives out dead skin cells, oil, and entrenched contaminants. A brand new skin surface is revealed, healthier and revitalized. The treatment is painless, and should feel like a deep tissue massage.

This ?lunch break facial? accommodates even the most frantic schedule. Not only is the treatment quick, it?s also versatile. You can luxuriate in microdermabrasion benefits from home, at your favorite spa, or your doctor?s office. Many home systems can even be incorporated into your morning routine. Ask your local salon about package deals.

Perhaps the most relished of all microdermabrasion benefits is that there are no discomfort-causing chemicals, scalpels, or lasers involved. Microdermabrasion does not utilize any of these tools, therefore effectively erasing all risks, recovery time, and commitment for comparable results. Microdermabrasion improves the appearance of skin texture, large pores, acne and acne scarring, dry or dull patches, sun spots, age spots, rough skin, blackheads and clogged pores, stretch marks, uneven skin tone, fine lines and wrinkles, and dermal circulation.

Unlike cosmetic surgery and other invasive skin enhancing treatments, which cost thousands of dollars, microdermabrasion is just a fraction of the cost. Home kits can be bought for as low as $20. Professional spa clinicians and medical professionals offer microdermabrasions treatments for as low a $100. Frequently, many health spas, beauty salons, cosmetic surgeons, and dermatologists offer discounts when you combine other services or opt for ongoing treatments.

Microdermabrasion fuses beauty and health into a single treatment, providing a safe alternative to invasive, skin-resurfacing techniques. So with peace of mind, indulge your skin with one of the most innovative and effective skincare techniques to come along in decades. As always, consult your doctor or skin care specialist on any treatment program.

Microdermabrasion Info provides detailed information on microdermabrasion, a progressive skin re-surfacing technique that targets wrinkles, lines, superficial scarring, stretch marks, acne, and sun damage. Microdermabrasion Info is the sister site of Acne Treatment Web.

Save Money By Making A List Of The Top 10 Treadmills Before Purchasing

When you are searching for your first treadmill it is always a good idea to take your time and consider which is the best treadmill for you within your price range. One of the easiest ways to do this is to look at the various web sites and magazines and see which ones they recommend, so that you can compile a list of the top 10 treadmills to choose from. There are hundreds of many different models available in all price ranges, so this will give you a better overview, allowing you the opportunity to easily choose the best machine.

Looking through exercise related web sites you should find many that have done reviews of treadmills for their reliability, usability and value for the money paid. You can also check out the more popular running and exercise related magazines to see if they carry reviews as well. This way you can make a good list of the top 10 treadmills in your price range and also find out the features that are available with them. Also it may be worth asking the instructors at your local gym, as they may be familiar with the machines and which are the really best value for their price.

Making your own list of the top 10 treadmills is a much better way of finding out which is the best treadmill for you instead of just going to a exercise shop and asking the salesman. The local sporting good stores usually only carry a limited range and of course, are likely to recommend their own machines above those of their competitors.

Buying a treadmill is an important decision, not only because it is expensive, but also because you want to get the best reward for your effort while exercising and the best way to do this, is to make sure that you get the best machine available for your budget. Although it is tempting to go out and buy the machine that looks the best in the advertisements, just because they have the best advertising does not mean that they necessarily have the best treadmill. Tanning Bed Lotions Ensure a Safe Tan

For many years tanning beds were an easy and quick way to get a tan in the middle of winter or when preparing for a tropical getaway. Today, when doctors claim that tanning beds are as dangerous as the sun itself and can cause skin cancer and premature aging, more and more people stay away from tanning beds. However, there are certain benefits from using a tanning bed, especially when protecting the skin with the proper tanning bed lotion.

Tanning bed lotions are used to moisturize the skin and infuse it with antioxidants that diminish and prevent the damage from UVA and UVB rays.

There are also tanning bed lotions that intensify the tanning process. These lotions contain methyl nicotinate that instantly penetrates and activate your melanin cells for a deeper color. Tan activating tanning lotions can also create a warming tingling sensation on the skin to increase the blood flow to the skin surface and speed up the tan. These tanning lotions moisturize the skin with essential oils and skin nourishing vitamins so that your skin looks bronzed and glowing.

Some tanning bed lotions employ another principle: they cool down the skin with mint and cucumber to prevent burns. Even though tanning bed lotions do not shield from the burn that can lead to the skin cancer, they can make it less heat-sensitive. No tanning bed lotions can deal with photosensitivity, which can be caused by medications you are currently taking.

There are special tanning bed lotions for use around eyes. You should always protect your eyes with special goggles that either clip on your nose or are secured with the ribbon. To further protect the fragile skin around your eyes from UVA/UVB damage, you can use tanning bed lotions with anti-oxidants such as grapefruit extract, vitamin E and even caviar proteins.

After-tan lotions are used to cool down and firm the skin, since too much UVA/UVB exposure can disrupt elastin fibers in the skin leading to wrinkles and sagging. Special herbs, essential oils, vitamins and amino acids in these tanning bed lotions form an invisible nourishing cocoon on the skin surface while repairing and preventing further dehydration. Many people prefer to nourish their after-tan skin with simple extra-virgin olive oil which has excellent anti-aging properties.

Even when you use great multi-purpose tanning bed lotions, make sure you still wear a swimsuit or underwear when tanning. If you want to avoid having those tan lines (which is currently very in fashion, implying that you tan naturally on the tropical beach), wear a bandeau-style bra and thongs to prevent the UVA/UVB rays from hitting the areas that are not accustomed to tanning.

Our indoor lifestyles and sunscreens diminish vitamin D production because the body gets vitamin D from UV light and not from foods. Vitamin D can also be derived from indoor tanning beds. Use a common sense and tan wisely and in moderation, and you will look gorgeous and healthy.

9 Quick Ways To Conquer Cellulite

In our never ending search for the illusive Fountain of Youth, nothing strikes a chord like the term cellulite. Interestingly, the term cellulite was first introduced to us by a fashion magazine. That fact is sufficient to generate speculation among opposing sides to this controversial subject.

Cellulite is a term that is used to describe fat deposits under the skin that outwardly give the skin a dimpled, or orange-peel like appearance. Cellulite is most often seen in women because the fat is arranged in large chambers separated by columns of collagen fibers.

There really is no substitute for good, old-fashioned, healthy nutrition and exercise. The tried and true methods do work:

1.Watch your diet.

2.Incorporate fresh and natural foods into your diet.

3.Drink plenty of water to avoid dehydration.

4.Limit the consumption of caffeine and alcohol.

5.Avoid high fat foods.

6.Get plenty of fiber.

7.Quit or cut down on smoking.

8.Avoid medications not necessary to health and well being.

9.Get plenty of exercise.

Following a regimen of good health, nutrition and exercise will rid your body of excess toxins and promote a general state of health that is optimum for pursuing any program for dealing with cellulite.

Lastly, think twice or three times before investing huge amounts of cash for so-called treatments or cures. You are now armed with the most important tool you need on your journey to Conquering Cellulite. That tool is knowledge! Use it wisely!

Weighting it Out Your Guide to Using Weight Lifting to Lose Weight

Weight lifting helps achieve weight loss goals because it helps boost your metabolism, which generates additional fat burning enzymes, and your body subsequently burns more fat.

There is some conflicting information on weight lifting and weight loss goals, however.

One expert has stated that if a person is more than 25 pounds overweight that they should set the weight training aside or make it very minimal until aerobic and other forms of exercise have gotten them within 25 pounds of their ideal weight.

The reason that extreme obesity and weight lifting don't work well for weight loss is because obese people often tend to add muscle easily while they in turn resist losing weight.

What some weight loss and weight lifting gurus tell these obese folks is to concentrate their exercise and weight loss efforts in the realm of aerobic exercise until they have gotten their weight down to less than 25 pounds over their ideal body weight.

At this point they can then add the weight lifting to their weight loss and exercise regimen. A person, for example, who is 40 pounds overweight, is recommended to do 30-45 minutes of aerobic activity six days each week. It is further suggested that their weight loss exercise regiment be two different forms of aerobic exercise practiced on alternate days.

Once they get to within 24 pounds of their ideal weight then they can cut their aerobic exercise back to four days a week and use the other two days for weight lifting. This is considered the ideal weight training and weight loss method.

Adult Type 2 Diabetes What Do You Know About?

Many people don't know about the different types of diabetes. There are three different types and they are Type 1 (child diabetes) Type 2 (adult diabetes) and Gestational diabetes. All three types are diabetes and will ohave all the symptoms of diabetes, yet each one has a different time at which it will show up in development.

Type 2 diabetes is most likely always associated with being overweight. We don't know what exactly triggers this type of diabetes, but it occurs when the insulin becomes lesser and lesser effective and as a result sugar starts to get built up in the blood. The medical term for this is insulin resistance. This type of diabetes is most commonly found in adults, and today is a very common medical condition. 1 in 90 people are assumed to have Type 2 diabetes, and though it was more commonly found in adults, it is more and more being found in younger generations.

An insulin resistance is when the insulin that your body produces fails to regulate the sugar levels in your blod. You will find this called ?beta cell failure?. Think you may have this? The symptoms are steady increase of blood pressure, joint pain due to gout, steady rise of fat levels in the blood that could lead to more severe heart problems.

Most of the symptoms of this disease are common to all the three types of diabetes, i.e. the patient will feel extremely thirsty and urinate often, will feel fatigued all the time, will experience sudden weight loss (though the loss in weight will not be too pronounced), get skin infections and irritation very frequently.

What should you do if you think you may have this disease? First of all, visit a doctor. Then you should take a serious look at your diet. You will have to make sure that you aren't consuming too much, or too little sugar. You will also need to add fiber to your diet, and eliminate fat. If you prove to have Type 2 diabetes you will have to regulate your blood sugar levels and also inject yourself with insulin if needed. Another piece of advice is to get your doctors number incases of an emergency.

Which Diet Plan Is Best? Study's Surprising Results

As the old year comes to a close and everyone begins to look forward to the beginning of a New Year, many people are also anticipating the beginning of their New Year?s resolutions. For numerous individuals, New Year?s resolutions will involve vows to cut back on their food intake, get on a diet and exercise regimen and drop at least a few pounds. The question that hangs in the air for those who are anticipating the start of a new diet lies in exactly which diet might happen to be right for them and which diet holds the key to helping them lose the most weight.

Certainly, there are numerous diets available and it seems like every few months a new diet or eating plan has emerged to become the new successful diet rage. Is it possible that all the ?popular? diets can help you lose weight or are there certain diets that can help you lose more weight than others?

This is the question that a group of researchers set out to answer recently. Over a period of two months, 160 individuals were monitored closely as they followed a supervised program. The varying factor among all 160 program participants was that they were allowed to choose whichever diet suited their fancy. Researchers waited and watched in anticipation to learn which diet or diets would prove to be most successful.

What they learned at the conclusion of the study proved to be quite interesting. The data they collected not only helped them to learn more about which diet programs tend to be more successful in terms of total weight loss but also which diet programs more individuals were more likely to stick with for long term weight loss and maintenance.

While the study participants were allowed to choose their favorite diet plan, most participants opted for one of the following: Atkins, Weight Loss, Ornish and the Zone. Even though initial data was conducted after just two months, researchers continued to study the remaining participants. They discovered that after a period of time more than half of those participants who opted for diet plans that focused on low carbs and high fat, such as the Atkins plan, dropped out. Additionally, approximately the same percentage of individuals who chose the Ornish plan, which focuses on low fat and high carb vegetarian foods, also quit their diets. Weight Watchers participants fared moderately better, with about two-thirds of that group?s participants sticking with it. The Zone participants showed similar results.

So, which diet plans performed best overall in terms of total weight loss? Surprisingly, they all performed about the same. Those individuals participating in the Ornish plan who were able to stick with their diet for the entire year achieved a weight loss rate of about 6%; the highest of all groups. Atkins came in at about 4%, with Weight Watchers and the Zone performing at an average of 5% weight loss. Health risk factors related to obesity were an entirely different matter; however. In terms of heart disease risk, Weight Watchers participants decreased their risk by 15%, while other diet plans hovered in the 12% range. The Ornish diet plan participants, who showed a higher overall weight loss, showed a lower decrease in risk of heart disease, at just 7%.

Overall; however, researchers concluded that in the end, there is no one magic diet. If you?re planning to resolve to lose weight in the New Year, your best strategy is still the same regardless of which diet plan you ultimately choose. Eat sensibly, cut back on portions, drink plenty of water, participate in a moderate exercise routine and find a diet buddy to support you in your weight loss goals.

HGH Releasers Decrease Fat While Increasing Lean Muscle

Human growth hormone (HGH) is produced throughout your life from the pituitary gland -- the command central of all hormonal messages in your body. It is responsible for all adolescent growth peaks but greatly decreases to about 80% from ages 21 to 61. Studies found out however that HGH could be produced by the pituitary gland in about the same level as in one?s youth, if properly stimulated.

Originally, HGH products were available in expensive injections of HGH derived from donors' pituitary glands. The HGH molecule simply couldn?t absorb into the bloodstream by other methods because it?s too large to pass through the walls of the digestive system. Thus, HGH releasers were created. This is a formula used to trigger and stimulate the pituitary gland to produce and secrete more HGH itself. This way, HGH goes into your body just as nature intended -- through the glandular system.

Use of HGH releasers has been shown to: decrease fat while increasing lean muscle; improve the look and feel of skin; increase bone density; power up the brain; maintain memory; boost sex drive; improve mood, and; banish depression and fatigue.

Results for those who use HGH releasers may depend on the level of HGH when you begin. Most people however, regardless of their present HGH level, report that they feel better, sleep better, and have more energy right away, while improvement in appearance and muscle tone become more pronounced over the first few months after using HGH releasers. As with all supplements, however, it is necessary to stay within the guidelines established by the pharmaceutical manufacturer and follow the instructions on the label or product insert because increasing the dosage usually results in product wastage.

Grow young the safe way. With HGH releasers, you are assured of a risk-free and effective means to dip into the fountain of youth.

Childhood Obesity ? Helping your Child

A child that suffers from overweight or obesity is one that should regarded as having a temporary disease, the obesity condition is dangerous for the child heath and has effect on his social life, self esteem and confidence. When you decide that you want to fight, and beat childhood obesity you should think carefully or a plan and a tactic you will use to fight this condition.

The three major keys in losing weight and having a successful diet plan are regular physical activity, performed on a set schedule and without exception the physical activity will encourage the child to get better and hopefully cause him or her to focus on activity rather than on food or the discomforts of the diet.

The next key to fighting childhood obesity is naturally a diet, making a diet plan should be done after advising with a diet professional that has all the tools and information about your child and his or her needs. making a realistic plan that will take a long time to complete you will gradually adapt new eating habits, showing the child that there are different kinds of foods and that making the child conscience of the things they eat and their effect on weight and the body. Increasing the awareness to the effect of different foods is a very important thing since it clearly identifies the cause and effect relationship to the child.

The last key for beating childhood obesity is as important and as natural as the first two, it is slowly and gradually changing the behavior of the child, and sometimes of the whole family, the new behavior patterns can be treated as rules first, make sure you explain why it is not good to eat candies, and more impotently you should make sure that your child knows that from time to time he or she are allowed to make an exception and have a candy, do not delete and block sweets from their lives completely since this usually has the opposite effect on kids.

The behavior change is a major one and if effects all the rest of the keys mentioned here, you should try and set rules in the beginning, if you can have a family meeting and set those rules it will be beneficial for everyone, making the children feel that they are setting these rules, you should encourage your kids to set rules and live by them, when you first start you can also join their activities to show them they are not alone, and from time to time you could explain how important it is to follow the rules and the benefits that are waiting in the end of the road.

A technique I have heard about some time ago uses imagination and positive thinking to encourage obese children to maintain a diet and physical activity routine. The parents have a weekly talk with the child and they go over all the last week events, good and bad, trying to explain what happened and why, not forgetting to compliment the child on his or her achievements. Once the events have been reviewed and points made clear the parent and the child close their eyes and imagine how it would be like in a month or two ahead, with more weight loss and better fitness and daily routine, talk about all the benefits of losing weight, like nicer clothes, better feeling, more energy, social admiration and so on, just make sure that the goals are realistic and can be achieved in a month or two of hard work, when your child achieves this you should mention the talk to him or her and demonstrate how belief and will power has real effect on life.

Treating Osteoporosis Naturally

Here?s how it happens . . . Bone is made up of living tissue, mostly collagen, which forms a framework for the bone. Calcium is a mineral which is added to this framework to make the bone hard and strong.

During childhood and teenage years, new bone is added faster than old bone is removed. After 30, this reverses. It?s more likely to develop if you don?t reach optimal bone mass during your early years. This is why treating osteoporosis naturally with the right calcium supplements along with minerals and vitamins can make an enormous difference and actually prevent it from happening in the first place!

In osteoporosis, the bones become brittle and porous due to loss of calcium and all of a sudden break. The bone density loss can occur long before the advanced symptoms and you may not even realize you?ve got it until a simple fall or accident causes a fracture. Natural osteoporosis supplements are well worth taking to avoid such pain in the future.

Symptoms in advanced osteoporosis are bone pain, joint pain and spontaneous fractures. Any bone can be affected but the most vulnerable and crucial areas will be the hips and spine.

Osteoporosis can strike at any age and affects approximately 60-70% of women and 30-40% of men. 50% of all women between the age of 45 and 75 show some degree of osteoporosis and out of those, 33% suffer serious bone deterioration. Women are more likely to develop osteoporosis than men because they lose bone tissue (through losing calcium) more rapidly than men, especially after menopause. This is why supplements for natural osteoporosis treatment are essential.

Osteoporosis is approximately the 12th most common cause of death (eg following a hip fracture). In the US alone it costs $3.8 billion to treat people with osteoporosis (and not using natural treatments). Compare that to the small cost of calcium supplements as a natural treatment for osteoporosis!

Preventing Osteoporosis - A Natural Approach

An overwhelming body of opinion favours calcium supplements as an alternative and natural treatment for osteoporosis. Calcium is the most abundant mineral in the human body and 99% of body calcium is found in the bones and teeth. However as you get older your body is less efficient at absorbing calcium and other nutrients.

The most recent clinical research clearly points out that our diets are critically deficient in calcium and the only way to get enough calcium to treat osteoporosis or prevent it is through using good, absorbable calcium supplements and a sensible diet.

  • Supplement with a good source of calcium and other minerals (liquid is always best) - most people consume less than half the amount of calcium needed to build and maintain bones.
  • A well balanced diet with plenty of green leafy vegetables.
  • Exercise ? particularly weight-bearing exercises.
  • Avoidance of processed foods, cigarettes, alcohol and carbonated drinks.

Detecting possible signs of osteoporosis is essential for prevention and cure.

A bone density test may be useful to detect signs of osteoporosis. However these are normally done on the large bones and it?s the small bones that will actually give you the indication that you?re losing bone tissue first.

A natural approach to treating osteoporosis is to first determine if you?re suffering a calcium deficiency and are at higher risk.

In his book, ?Rare Earths Forbidden Cures? , Dr Joel Wallach lists the common signs of calcium deficiency: receding gums (osteoporosis of facial bones and jaw bones), kidney stones, bone spurs, cramps and twitches (e.g. eye twitches), lower back pain, Tinnitus (ringing in the ears is actually osteoporosis of the ear bone), high blood pressure can sometimes be a calcium deficiency, poor blood clotting, Arthritis, bad PMS, cracking bones and joints.

Highly active or athletic people ? if you sweat heavily, your loss of minerals, particularly calcium, will be much higher! You need to replace all those minerals you?ve sweated out!)

Risk factors:

  • Women (especially post-menopausal).
  • Age ? the older we are the more bone tissue we lose. Older men and women need to consume more calcium.
  • Body size ? small thin-boned people are at greater risk because they have less bone mass.
  • Lactose intolerance and celiac disease can lead to calcium deficiency.
  • Diets high in processed food which are high in phosphorus and prevent calcium from being absorbed.

Treating Osteoporosis Naturally

Whilst there are a number of drug treatments offered by conventional medicine, the general consensus is that treating osteoporosis naturally with supplements and early prevention methods haven?t been used to their full advantage.

When it comes to treating osteoporosis naturally, the use of nutritional supplements with calcium as a focus have produced spectacular results. The following supplements for treating osteoporosis naturally are recommended:

  • Calcium & magnesium supplements from a high quality and highly absorbable source at 2000 mg and 1000 mg per day respectively for the first 30 days.
  • Colloidal calcium, magnesium, boron (can be found in plant derived minerals) digestive enzymes taken 15 minutes before meals. (improves absorption of calcium from food and supplements).
  • Vitamin D (lack of vitamin D can cause a calcium deficiency as it helps the body absorb calcium).
  • Calcium is highly absorbable (up to 98%) in organic plant derived colloidal minerals and water soluble chelated form. (i.e. Liquid calcium supplements with vitamin D, magnesium and manganese are excellent).

Dietary Tips for Natural Treatment and Prevention of Osteoporosis

  • Natural sources of Calcium: some dairy products such as yogurt and cheese (milk is not a good source as it contains a high amount of protein and will prevent calcium from being absorbed), Dark green leafy vegetables (eg broccoli and spinach), Tofu, Almonds, Foods enriched with calcium (eg some orange juice is enriched with calcium supplements).
  • Natural sources of Vitamin D: Egg yolks, Salt water fish, Liver NB Your skin will make Vitamin D following direct exposure to sunlight.
  • Drink eight glasses of pure, filtered water every day (you need water to eliminate toxins).
  • Eat a variety of foods with a low fat, high protein intake.
  • Eat organic, fresh foods wherever possible.
  • Exercise and Lifestyle for Osteoporosis

Exercise is important as a natural treatment for osteoporosis because bones respond to exercise in the same way as muscles ? they grow stronger. (If you have osteoporosis, plan your exercise programme with your physician.

Weight-bearing exercise is best because the bones respond by becoming stronger (e.g. walking, hiking, jogging, stair climbing, weight training, tennis).

If there?s one thing that conventional medicine and natural osteoporosis treatments have in common, it?s exercise. Many accidents and falls will occur around the home since this is where you spend most of your time. If you have osteoporosis, keep your home uncluttered and obstacle-free. Have things within easy reach. Do use a walking stick or other aid for support. Make sure stairs are well lit. Don?t rush! Treating osteoporosis naturally can start right in your own home!

Treating osteoporosis naturally - things to avoid:

    • Smoking affects the lungs and is bad for the bones and bad for your osteoporosis.
    • Excessive alcohol ? can contribute to bone loss.
    • Processed foods (Many processed foods are high in phosphorous. Diets rich in phosphorous upset the phosphorous to calcium ratio and may result in calcium deficiency.)
    • Some medications can cause bone loss, particularly medications prescribed for arthritis and asthma.
    • Excess sugar and caffeine lead to a loss of calcium from the bones.
    • Carbonated drinks neutralize stomach acid ? the result is decreased absorption of calcium into your bones.

    Summary

  • Our risk of developing osteoporosis rises as we get older and affects men and women.
  • There are many warning signs for osteoporosis such as grinding joints, bone spurs, receding gums and high blood pressure - all signs of a calcium deficiency .
  • Treating osteoporosis naturally involves supplementation with liquid minerals - particularly calcium, magnesium and other trace minerals along with a good multivitamin.
  • Lifestyle is important - reduce your intake of sugar, caffeine and alcohol (these all cause calcium to be lost from the tissues); increase your intake of fresh food - particularly green leafy vegetables.
  • Weight-bearing exercises such as yoga, light weights are an excellent strategy for preventing and treating osteoporosis naturally.

Easy Home Remedies For Curing Snoring

Snoring is not a disease. It is a sort of an imbalance in the human body mechanism. Though, it is quite embarrassing for those who know that they snore. It causes a peculiar kind of disturbance and amusement to those around the person who is snoring.

Well, if the level of snoring could be controlled or eliminated altogether, it would be a good contribution to social peace. And it is certainly possible with some very easy home remedies.

1.Try some realignment with the sleeping postures. Elevate your head with pillows; or raise the head of your bed by several inches. The chances of your throat muscle blocking the air passage, when they relax in sleep are less. Don't sleep on your back. You are giving absolute freedom for the snoring exercise by doing so. Your tongue and soft palate fall back, narrowing the airway.

2.Next remedy for curing snoring is to bring in some lifestyle changes in your living. In addition to snoring, this step may solve many other problems as well.

Exercise regularly and lose extra pounds of your body. Prohibit the habit of smoking and drinking as alcohol relaxes the throat muscles and blocks the air passages further. Smoking also puts additional blocks in the air passages and leads to snoring. If you are in the habit of taking sleeping pills, antihistamines and tranquilizers, avoid them. They all help the cause of snoring.

3.Some over the counter medications can also be categorized under the home remedies. They are anti-snoring pills, throat sprays and nasal strips. The reason for their being counted as home remedies is that the ingredients contained in the anti-snoring pills are plant enzymes and herbs. They control nose and throat tissues from swelling. Thus they are conducive for smoother airflow that counters snoring.

4.Any drug free medication is equivalent to a home remedy. The formula of such medication is based on the experience of generations.

Then there are some drug-free snoring aids that keep your jaw in a pushed forward position. It is also known as the ?mandibular advancement splint?. Its function is to open up your airways and it is reported to have helped in stopping snoring in more than 80% of the cases. Many models of these types of apparatus are available in the market.

The combination of all your conscious efforts on the lines indicated above should help you reduce the level of snoring. You have begun to think about the problem. You are working on it daily. You will soon see the good results and come out of the embarrassing situation- sooner than you expected!

    The Fear Of Stuttering

I am someone, who from what my parents have told me, started to stutter when I was four years of age. I have to say that I hated having a stuttering problem and was determined that I eventually would be able to have the confidence to say whichever words that I wanted to, in any situation. There were you see a number of words which I believed I just could not say and I also found it difficult to talk when I felt under pressure. After living with the stutter for eighteen years, I finally managed to achieve fluency and life has never been so good. It is like having a weight lifted from my shoulders.

Many people who stutter find that it can, in a way, rule their whole lives. Every decision they take seems to be affected by the speech impediment. For example, I decided to leave school because of my own stutter. My life at school was made so much harder by being unable to converse fluently. In fact I used to fear going to school, this was mainly because I was scared that I would be asked to read out aloud from a book or would be asked a question in front of the whole class. I will never forget when I attempted to take part in a role play in an English lesson, I was a complete nervous wreck and had a terrible time.

When I was at home, a place where I should be relaxed, I used to be afraid of the telephone of all things. Fluent people may well think that I am crazy from some of the things that I am admitting to in this article. On the other hand, I am sure other people who have a stutter may identify with some of the issues that I was trying to deal with on a daily basis. Going back to the telephone, there were many times when the phone would start to ring and I would just ignore it and not answer it. My parents would return home a little while later and would see that someone has perhaps left a message. They would enquire as to why I had not answered the call, I would reply with some excuse such as that I had popped out to the shops.

As you can see I basically had a fear of stuttering and during this period I would do anything to avoid stuttering. To overcome the speech impediment I was willing to do anything to beat it.

Stephen Hill offers various forms of stuttering therapy. He has a number of websites including:

The Advantages Of Including A Home Treadmill In Your Exercise Routine

Exercising at home has become a very popular activity as many are getting increasingly aware of the health benefits or regular exercise and how it can also help you manage your weight. As a result, there are plenty of home fitness equipment choices that can be made. One choice that many people have made in recent years is to start a walking/running program at home using a home treadmill, and here are some of the reasons why that can be a great choice for you too:

    1. Although the health benefits of walking and running are many and well-known, daily life remains very hectic and busy for many. Because of that, finding time to schedule a daily workout gets more and more difficult. But most people can fit about 30 minutes or so into their schedule each day and that's all it takes to jump on a treadmill at home and get a good aerobic workout. Because you don't have to travel to a gym that saves even more time and makes a home treadmill very convenient and time efficient.

    2. Walking is an easy way to start an exercise program. Almost anybody can do it. And because most treadmills have an adjustable speed that starts very slow, even a person with health problems can easily start on the road to improved health without overdoing it. Of course, as with any exercise routine, you should consult your doctor beforehand to be sure that you do so under their guidance.

    3. Many modern treadmills also have electronic programs that are built in to vary the workout intensity by adjusting the speed as you go, or increasing and decreasing the incline of your walk or run. This helps alleviate some of the boredom associated with running in place too.

    4. Working out on a treadmill is an activity that can easily be combined with another pursuit to help keep your mind busy as you exercise, like watching TV or listening to an audio book or music. If you enjoy the time that is spent working out you will have more tendency to stay with it, so find something that keeps your interest as you exercise.

    5. Walking and/or running outside can have it's own set of challenges, including bad weather and the need for safety. Exercising on a home treadmill instead solves both of those issues. You can exercise whenever you want in a controlled environment when you are at home, meaning that you don't have to brave the elements each time you workout. And you should feel very safe in your own home.

There are definitely other benefits of using a home treadmill in your daily fitness workout, but the ones listed are some of the most common ones heard from folks who are regular exercisers. So instead of waiting any longer, why not buy a home treadmill and get started?

Thad Pickering writes on many consumer related topics including fitness. You can find the best home treadmill and home treadmill reviews by visiting our Home Fitness website.

First off, don't panic! Over 95% of back pain does not require surgery, and will subside on its own anywhere from a couple of days to months. With the back, it is rather tricky to predict how quickly it will heal. Be patient, and keep positive!

Please be aware that some chronic back conditions such as spinal stenosis, spondylosis, and osteoarthritis may never completely heal without a physicians care. Symptoms generally come and go, and then come and go again, where the recipient learns to manage the condition with medication, exercise, physical therapy, spinal blocks, and/or surgical intervention. Treatment all depends on the severity of the condition as determined by the physician's interpretation of the X-Ray, and/or MRI.

    Recovery Tips-

    1. Avoid motions that irritate it, but don't stay in bed for days on end which will weaken you

    2. Ice for the first 48 hours, then apply a heating pad thereafter. 15-20 minutes at a time

    3. See your doctor if pain persists longer than 1 week.

    4. Follow pain medication recommendations (such as NSAIDS)

    5. Light massage, and pain free range of motion stretching

    6. Light walking (no hills) can help

    7. Physical Therapy- massage, electric muscle stimulation, ice, heat, exercise, stretching

    8. Pool therapy

    9. Don't panic! Be patient! Most cases will get better over time.

    10. KEEP MOVING (pain free movement) is the KEY!

Now that you are managing your back pain, let's focus on preventing it from occurring again. Depending upon the severity of your specific back condition, you can decrease the chance of returning pain, manage ongoing pain, or possibly prevent a reoccurrance. But HOW?

The Secret Answer - EXERCISE CORE MUSCLES in synergy with your particular condition.

Your goal should be to safely strengthen your core muscles to the max. The core muscles keep you upright, balanced, and able to maintain your spine in a stable position. The muscles that need to be worked are the back, legs, abdominals, and hips. By keeping these muscles strong, and flexible, it will provide a more secure base adding protection for a vulnerable spine. Warning: if you don't strengthen your core, the older you get, the weaker your muscles become, and the more vulnerable you will be to pain.

When I mention exercise the core, I am referring to doing the proper exercises for specific conditions. It is impossible for me to tailor this prevention protocol for everyone, since each person needs their own specific program with medical team input. However, I will give you a few basic back strengthening tips. In correlation with your specific condition, you must clear specific exercises with your health care team.

    Prevention Tips-

    1. Stay active - use back smart exercises on a regular basis

**I will be listing specific back smart exercises in future editions of the multimedia Wellness WORD Newsletter.

    2. While walking and exercising, maintain proper spinal alignment (good posture)

    3. Keep your weight under control

    4. Don't smoke

    5. Strengthen your core muscles

    6. Keep the muscles limber and stretched

    7. Do cardiovascular exercise ( ex. walk) on a regular basis.

    8. Lift with proper form (use legs); proper spinal alignment

    9. Contract abdominals throughout the day to protect spine as well as strengthen supporting muscles

    10. Avoid the following:

    Straight leg sit-ups

Bent leg sit-ups during acute pain

Leg lifts (lifting both legs while lying on your back)

    Walking at a high incline

Lifting heavy weights above your waist (shoulder press, standing bicep curl)

Any stretches done while sitting with your legs in a V position

    Toe touches while standing

    Running or repetitive stair climbing

    Excessive spine twisting, and bending

My intention for writing this article is to inform you there is hope. You can get over back pain, and do certain things to prevent it from returning, or returning with more intense symptoms.

Caution: Too Much 'Alone Time' May Be Hazardous to Your Health

Is the stereotype of the lonely senior citizen a reality or a myth? Research suggests that although aging brings with it some life circumstances that increase the likelihood of loneliness, personal choices are the important variable.

Investigators have defined several possible scenarios regarding the relationship between loneliness and health. One suggests that loneliness is a cause -- perhaps preceding a decline in mental or physical health and actually contributing to problems in both of those areas.

The other options suggest that loneliness in seniors increases as a result of poor health.

This can be for several reasons including:
*the increased impact of chronic conditions,
*the absence of a significant caregiver,
*or lack of important social contacts and connections.

Older people with health problems are, at times, less able (or sometimes less willing) to engage in social activities. People without adequate social support can become less active, both physically and mentally. The lack of mobility may also increase the opportunity for poor nutritional habits to take over. None of these things helps to keep a small health problem small, do they?

So, knowing that isolation and loneliness have the potential to influence the health and well-being of older people, what can a community (or an individual) do?

Keeping in regular contact with older family members, friends and neighbors is certainly a good start. In a mobile society, however, geography often presents a big challenge for families. Community becomes even more important.

Local communities and groups can be sure to involve seniors at all levels of planning ? especially for community events. In addition to filling that ever-present ?volunteer void? they can also offer valuable perspective about scheduling, the need for transportation and affordability of leisure and educational activities.

When is a Nursing Home Appropriate for the Alzheimer's Patient?

Caring for an Alzheimer's patient can be a huge burden. When it becomes too hard and too time consuming for you to take care of your loved one, it may be time to look for a nursing home.

When you feel comfortable, then you can start planning ahead which will help avoid crisis situations later. You may not ever need a nursing home, but act in a proactive manner just in case the day comes. It is well known that making decisions in a crisis situation can be very difficult and stressful on everyone, so make sure you plan ahead of time.

You may find information and a list of nursing homes in your area from your local Alzheimer?s Association, or an elder law firm. They are most likely to have a list of facilities that offer dementia care or at least a dementia unit.

When you find the nursing home that will be the most appropriate for your loved one with Alzheimer?s, make sure you check the following:

    • What is its appearance? When was their license accredited?

    • Is the facility location convenient for you and your family for frequent visits?

    • How does the staff react to questions -- are their greetings warm and welcoming, do they interact with your loved one?

    • How well do the resident participants socialize with other people?

    • Are visits allowed and are they encouraged?

    • What is the staff ratio per patient? It should be at least 1 staff member for 8 persons.

    • Is it possible to take a tour of the facility and the rooms?

    • If there is a waiting list, how long will it take before your loved one can be accepted?

    • Do they have a single room or do they share with another patient?

    • Are these rooms furnished or unfurnished? If unfurnished, you will be able to bring your own furniture and decorate your room as wanted.

    • Are there elevators? What kind of emergency plan do they have if a patient needs to be evacuated promptly?

    • How do they handle patients that wander and what kind of security do they have?

These are some of the questions you can ask on your first visit. You can always come back later or give them a call later if you have other questions.

Another aspect of the nursing home to take into consideration is the financial issue. Most insurance companies will not cover these costs. When your loved one is being admitted in the nursing home you selected, the admittance staff will be able to assist you and discuss the payment options with you.

Make sure to ask what is included in the fees or contract:

    • Is there an ongoing process for assessing a resident's need for services and how often are those needs evaluated?

    • What additional services and staff are available if the resident's needs change?

    • Is there an agreement available which discloses healthcare, accommodations, personal care and supportive services, all fees, and admission and discharge provisions, emergency services if necessary?

    • Is there any government or other programs available that may help covering the costs?

    • What happens if funds are used up and full payments can no longer be made. Does the facility accept Medicaid?

You want as well to have a good knowledge of the environment and the type of healthcare your loved one is going to receive:

    • What type of healthcare and personal care are available? Do they have routine exams available, like vision and dental?

    • What is the qualification of the staff members?

    • Is the staff available to assist residents who experience memory loss or disorientation, and how do they handle it?

    • Does the staff take care of the doctor?s appointments? Do they drive them over there and wait for them?

There is one more thing to consider when deciding if the nursing home is appropriate for your loved one with Alzheimer?s. Will he/she be happier than at home? Many people do quite well in nursing homes.

Once your loved one enters the nursing home, he/she can still leave for short trips to sleep over at family and friends. If he/she is unhappy, a transfer to another facility or a return home with assisted living may be an option.

You may also doubt how beneficial a dementia care unit can be for your loved one who has Alzheimer?s. If the dementia unit is developed and staffed correctly, it can be very valuable. The idea of a dementia care unit is to provide specialized care. This includes staff training specifically for dementia, smaller units to ease feelings of being overwhelmed, a quieter environment to prevent over-stimulation, and a locked unit safe for wandering and pacing. Wandering and pacing are symptoms that most Alzheimer?s patients experience. Instead of trying to stop them from this behavior, dementia units let them continue it in safe surroundings. Most facilities for Alzheimer?s care have their own activity director and many times the direct care staff are also trained to participate in activities with the residents with dementia.

To obtain more information on facilities in your area that offer dementia care units for Alzheimer?s patients, contact your state?s Department on Aging.

How to Lose One Pound a Year: BFJ Diet Followup

In my original article on the Big Fat John Plan for losing weight I told you that I would report back to you on how things are going. I said in that article that when I weight 187 pounds that my cardiologist told me that was where I should be for good cardiac health. Since then, my heart has added a spare part from a pig, an aortic valve. Here is my report:

I went back on the Big Fat John Plan six weeks ago. I weighed 222 pounds at check-in. I now weigh 204 pounds. Using higher mathematics I calculate that I have lost 18 pounds or 3 pounds each week.

In the current version of the Big Fat John Plan I printed out individual sheets, one for each week of the plan. At the top of each sheet is printed Big Fat John and Week of: I actually print the starting date of each week. For example: Big Fat John Week of: 5/14. I printed sheets for 12 weeks. I may have to print more later.

Below the title, there is a table of 8 columns and 14 rows. That makes a cell about one inch wide and just over ? inch tall. There is a title row in the table. The first column says Food and the other seven are labeled Calories. The last seven columns are for the days of the week. I start with Sunday.

The reason I use one column, the left column, labeled Food is that most days I eat some of the same foods and I don?t have to write them down in the day cells. Each cell gets only one food and if all the cells are filled for a day, that?s it. NO MORE FOOD!

In the day cells I write the number of calories in the food item in that cell. If the food is not listed in the left column, I write down the name of the food too.

I don?t like to eat more than 1000-1200 calories each day. I lose weight when my caloric intake is in that range. I lose about 3 pounds a week. That is what I have lost in the first six week period of the current campaign. When I get to my target weight of 187 pounds I will taper off to about 1300 calories and check to see if I?m holding weight or gaining again.

In the current campaign I stopped recording after the second week was completed. Why? Because by the end of the second week I know what I need to do to stay on the diet and I don?t need to write down what I know. However, the Chart goes up every Sunday Morning and I record my weight and the circumference of my huge stomach above the column. I record my weight two or three times a week.

Let me modify my statement on not recording after the first two weeks. The chart is on the wall. If I find that I?m not losing weight, I will immediately begin to record.

I?ve lost only one inch from my girth so far. It takes time to get things going. I?m not sure where my weight loss is centered but my wife says that she can see the change.

Well there is a change. I?ve found that my feet are no longer swelling and my doctor will probably be able to take me off some medication. I also notice that when I walk one mile around the high school track near our home it is much easier on my legs. My pig valve keeps me pumping along at a 3 mile/hour clip. In other words, I walk one mile in 20 minutes as my cardiologist has instructed.

Unfortunately, walking does not burn many calories. What it does do is this. It increases your metabolism. That is why it is so important to exercise every day.

My clothes fit better too. I?m just worried that new clothes that I have purchased will look baggy. Well, I?ve got plenty of other clothes that I can?t now get into.

I no longer eat at night. If I really feel the pain I might eat an apple or a graham cracker with a teaspoon of peanut butter on it. If I drink milk or juices I usually take a half or quarter of a glass and I?m just as satisfied as if I had a full glass. I say to my self. Ah! I?ve had a big glass of milk and now I?m going to finish it off. Such a dirty trick to play on myself.

I stay away from eating bread more than once a day and most days I don?t eat bread. I like eggs and have them several times a week. I never eat bread with the eggs. I say, cook more eggs if you need a bit more to eat. I never go over three eggs at a time. A two-egg omelette with just one thin slice of cheese satisfies me just as much as one of my three-egg, cheese filled, fluffed monsters.

Protein is essential to losing weight without dying of hunger pains. I will occasionally have a small steak for breakfast with or without an egg or two. I like hotdogs. I?ll eat a beef or turkey hotdog occasionally rather than a meal. I?ve found that I don?t? need to eat two hotdogs.

I eat vegetables fresh or from the can. I add a small amount of butter substitute (no trans-fats allowed) to make them palatable after they are cooked and drained. Occasionally, I will eat a salad or a piece of fish. I like crab meat and if I can get it at a good price, or get it at all in Idaho, I will use it to make a crab meat omelette.

I cut back on the salt.

Fruit is essential. I prefer fresh fruit to sugary fruit juices. In fact, I limit the amount of juice because you can drink a bundle of calories without even thinking about it. Fruit is a satisfying snack and will keep you from overeating.

I can not diet and go though a week without eating normally. On Sunday we always go to my son?s house and I ignore any consideration of calories. I only eat once that day and I eat what I want except for one thing. I make a cake for my grandkids every Sunday morning. I eat only a small sample piece of the cake of the day.

Every week I also take my wife (and sometimes my son and his wife or a couple of the grandkids) out to dinner.

We like to go to the Golden Coral because we can fill up on salads before we get to the good stuff. Sometimes I just stick to protein and fruit on these visits. I ignore calories for the main part but I stay away from the desert tables. My wife who once taught at Weight Watchers has dieted for many years. She likes to separate food groups. She will eat fruits on her fruit day, vegetables on her vegetable day, and protein on her protein day.

Yesterday we went to the New China Buffet in Twin Falls. I ate two bowls of soup with a couple of Chinese dumplings added. Then I only had to go around one of the five or six tables once to be satisfied. I ate a couple of macaroons and a half scoop of ice cream for desert. That was all I ate all day. I had a warm feeling in my tummy for hours.

If you decide to diet and you never binge, you will fail.

That?s my opinion and I?m sticking to it.

The reason is this. If you go on a starvation diet and never binge your body will think that you are starving to death. It will shut down your metabolism and you will stop losing weight. If you binge a couple of times a week, your body will think that all is well.

I saw on television that Marlene Dietrich only ate every three days. I guess that is one way to do it but that would not be for me. I'm not a snake.

My program is to eat whatever you want but in small quantities. I try to stay away from fats.

Most men can cut down to 1500 calories each day and lose weight. That is because they burn 2500 calories. For me, I guess I seldom burn over 1500 calories each day. Therefore I must drop my caloric intake lower to lose weight.

What should your caloric intake be to lose weight?

The only way I know is to experiment.

While you are experimenting make sure you are getting the vitamins and minerals that you need. Take a multivitamin everyday. Occasionally substitute one of those discount diet drinks for a meal. They come in chocolate, strawberry, and vanilla and are available in most supermarkets and drugstores. If price is no object you can drink Insure? or another brand name instead.

The problem that must be overcome in dieting is discouragement. You will not lose the same amount of weight every week. You might even gain a pound.

    Don?t worry about it.

Just make sure you are on your regimen.

The amount you lose every week will also taper off. So far, it has not for me but I know it will. Your body has a mind of its own and it will take action if you scare it into thinking you are starving. That?s why it is important to pig-out occasionally. Just remember when you are pigging out to stay away from too many sweets, fats, and carbohydrates.

At my present rate of weight loss I should disappear by the end of September, 2007.

What is Acne A Brief users Guide for Parents Teens and the Rest of us

Acne is a disease in which the hair follicles on your skin become clogged and infected. This results in one of the three types of acne lesions to form.

The production of excess sebum is the culprit. It causes the follicles to become blocked. The medical community is still uncertain as to what triggers this excess production. Sebum is produced by the sebaceous oil gland and everybody needs a small amount to achieve healthy skin. Sebum helps protects the skin from harmful bacteria by washing it away.

    Types of Acne Lesions:

The three types of acne lesions are whiteheads & blackheads (also known as closed and open comedones respectively), papules & pustules, and cysts.

Whiteheads as the name suggests, look like white bumps. They form under the skin and never reach the surface. This makes them very hard to eliminate. Blackheads grow upward and break the skins surface. This enlarged follicle and the oxidation of the dead cells, sebum, and bacteria have a black color, hence the name.

Papules form when a whitehead burst and the bacteria spreads to the surrounding tissues under the skin. This causes your body?s immune system to increase its fight on the infection making the inflammation worse. They appear as small, firm, red bumps. Pustules form as the body?s immune system continues to fight the infection by sending pus to the area. They appear similar to a papules with the addition of a yellowish white head.

Cysts are the third and final type of acne lesion. They form when a pustule worsens and expands further down under the skins surface. They appear red or purple and are very painful. This is the most serious of all types of acne lesions.

    Types of Acne:

Acne can not only be classified by the types of acne lesions, but further broken down by acne type; depending on what types of lesions you have. People whose acne consists of whiteheads and blackheads would have what is called comedonal acne. A mix of blackheads, whiteheads, papules and pustules acne lesions is called acne vulgaris and is the most common type of acne. The third type of acne is called cystic acne and it is when someone has all three types of acne lesions with numerous cysts.

    Who Can Get Acne:

While most people associate acne with teens, anybody can experience some type of acne at any age. That said certain groups of people are more likely to experience acne. They include teens, people under stress, people who have a family history of the disease, people taking certain drugs and adult women.

Weight Loss Programs:The 7 Critical Points You Must Check Before You Choose

Yes, you must be aware of the following 7 points before adopting a diet plan.

    1) Your weight loss program must remove toxins from your body.

    Do you know these facts?

FACT #1:90% of the toxins in your body are expelled from your body through breath. But an average person uses only 30% of his/her lung capacity!

FACT #2:8% of the toxins are removed from the excretory organs. But 80% of the population has clogged colons resulting in pounds of impacted waste.

FACT #3:2% of the toxins are removed through the skin, nose, ears etc.

So,where do all the toxins that are not expelled through the breath and excretory organs go? Simple, they get stored in your body.

No matter how much clean you think your body is....it has a storage of toxins in one form or the other due to the above factors.

And,toxins are the No.1 cause of fat deposition. In fact,it's toxin which makes fat removal so difficult to achieve.

But, most of the fat supplement manufacturers and diet experts don't seem to know anything about this vital fact! or atleast they are pretending not to know.

Remember. No toxin removal-No fat removal. Period.

    2) You must Lose Fat not water

Most of the diet programs are based on low calorie diets. This kind of food deprevation signals your body to shed water stored in and around the cells.Remember, your body is 70% water.

Losing this water around the cells causes your body to instantly lose some weight making you think that the weight loss program is a success.

Whereas, this water weight comes back as easily as it was lost.

Conclusion? Be 100% sure if the weight loss program you are about to select makes your body lose just water or real fat.

    3) The weight loss program must optimize the functioning of the fat burning organs in your body.

Most of the products available in the market today don't fulfill this criterion.

There are appetite suppressants that only suppress the appetite........which is very dangerous, and fat blockers, which only block the fat you eat.

The popular diet programs go one step ahead by limiting the type and amount of food you eat.

This results in malnutrition of the various fat burning organs of the body, depriving them of nutrients and resulting in their malfunctioning and untimely failure.

Most of the weight loss programs can never improve the functioning of the organs responsible for natural and effortless weight loss over a long period of time.

Hence, look for info about whether your weight loss program really has the necessary nutrients required and a strategy to keep these fat burning organs in good shape.

    4) The weight loss programs must be free of harmful chemicals and drugs without side effects.

Most of the weight loss supplements have one or the other side effects because they are made from untested chemicals and drugs like ephedra, which are harmful to your body.

    5) Must have a Scientific basis-tried and tested over a long period of time.

99% of all the weight loss programs available in the market have no scientific basis. They have not been tested and proven over a long period of time.

In fact, most products use you as a guinea pig for testing their products!

    6) Your weight loss program must increase your metabolism naturally.

Without increasing metabolism in a natural way, fat burning is impossible.

    7) No drastic reduction in food intake should be necessary.

It is a wrong notion propagated by the diet industry that the less calories in-more is the weight loss. This is a great lie and harms the body. Yo-yo dieting is the result of this approach.

In fact, drastic reduction in calorie intake deprives vital nutrients to the very organs that are responsible for metabolism and fat burning resulting in their failure to burn fat.

Hence, watch out for very low calorie diets!

99% of diet programs in the market today will definitely fail this test and the reason for it? They are Junk!.

Yes,the diet industry is full of lies and false claims regarding weight loss. The real fact is..majority..yes..majority don't know the real reason for fat accumulation and what really works.
